Slovenia launches ‘Varno v šolo’ traffic safety campaign

The Traffic Safety Agency (AVP) has launched the ‘Varno v šolo’ (Safe to School) national preventive campaign, which will run until September 6. The initiative aims to increase driver awareness regarding the vulnerability of children in traffic, particularly near schools and on school routes during the first days of the academic year.

AVP officials noted that young pedestrians are harder to see, and they often struggle to accurately judge vehicle speed, distance, and sound direction. Furthermore, children are easily distracted by their surroundings, which can lead to unpredictable movements. Drivers are urged to adjust their speed, anticipate child behavior, and avoid distractions like mobile phones.

Statistics released by the agency show that 290 children under the age of 14 were involved in traffic accidents by August 18. This year, one child has died and 21 have been seriously injured in this age group. To support safety, the agency is distributing over 18,200 reflective markers to municipalities. Volunteers, including firefighters and parents, will also monitor dangerous sections of school routes to ensure safe passage.
