Slovenia mandates microchipping for all pet cats by 2027

Slovenia is implementing new regulations regarding the mandatory microchipping and registration of pet cats. According to an amendment to the Animal Protection Act, all pet cats must be microchipped and entered into the Central Register of Pet Animals (CRHŽ) by January 1, 2027.

To facilitate this transition, the state is providing subsidies to offset the costs of microchipping and registration. Owners can receive a 30 EUR subsidy per cat if the procedure is completed by August 31, 2026. For services performed between September 1, 2026, and December 31, 2026, the subsidy will decrease to 8 EUR per cat.

The subsidy is applied directly by veterinarians, meaning owners do not need to file for reimbursement. The microchip serves as a permanent identification method to help return lost animals and manage the cat population more effectively. Once the mandate is fully in effect, kittens must be microchipped no later than 12 weeks of age.
