Slovenia reviews laws on public symbols and healthcare funding

The Slovenian government is advancing several legislative measures. A proposal to amend the Law on the Coat of Arms, Flag, and Anthem of the Republic of Slovenia has been sent to the National Assembly. The law aims to ensure that only symbols with a legal basis are used on public buildings to maintain institutional neutrality and prevent the use of public spaces for individual political or personal stances. Violations could result in fines for public institutions and individuals.

In healthcare, the government is considering a law to establish a public fund for the advanced treatment of rare diseases in children. This fund would utilize diverse financing sources, including tax revenues, industry cooperation, and European funds, to cover treatments not yet integrated into the standard insurance system.

Simultaneously, the Health Insurance Institute of Slovenia (ZZZS) has called on lawmakers to maintain state budget transfers to the health fund at 520 million euros. The ZZZS warns that proposed budget cuts of 100 million euros for 2026 could jeopardize financial stability, potentially leading to significant payment delays to healthcare providers and suppliers into 2027.
