Slovenia sees rise in electric scooter accidents and fatalities

Traffic accidents involving electric scooters are increasing in Slovenia, leading to a rise in serious injuries and fatalities. Data shows that in 2022, police handled 232 accidents involving e-scooters, which rose to 307 in 2023. In the first eight months of the current year, 247 accidents have already been recorded. While no e-scooter riders died in 2023, four fatalities have been reported so far this year.

Approximately 70 percent of accidents are caused by the riders themselves, with speeding and failure to follow traffic rules cited as the most common causes. Safety concerns are heightened by frequent violations, such as riding without helmets and carrying passengers, which is prohibited. Carrying a passenger increases weight, affecting stability, braking distance, and steering control.

The Auto-Moto Association of Slovenia and police are calling for stricter adherence to traffic regulations, noting that the perceived simplicity of e-scooters often leads to a dangerous sense of security despite speeds reaching 25 km/h.
