Slovenia to hold four referendums on October 11
Slovenia is preparing for a significant election day on October 11, 2026, when voters will decide on four separate referendum questions. The official campaign period is underway and will conclude on October 9.
One is a legislative referendum regarding an amendment to the Parliamentary Inquiry Act passed in May 2026. This amendment changes legal protections and the ability to challenge inquiry acts before the Constitutional Court. Proponents of the referendum, including former members of the Human Rights Committee, argue the amendment removes key safeguards against political abuse.
The other three are consultative referendums: 1. Whether the right to cash social assistance for able-bodied individuals should be conditioned on performing community service. 2. Whether the mandatory RTV Slovenia contribution should be abolished. 3. Whether citizens from third countries should be granted voting rights in local elections.
While the results of the consultative referendums are not legally binding, the legislative referendum outcome would prevent the National Assembly from passing a law that contradicts the voters' decision for one year.
