Slovenia to issue 8.4 million euros in drought relief for farmers

Slovenian Agriculture Minister Janez Cigler Kralj has announced that financial aid for farmers affected by drought is being processed. By the end of August, 3,811 decisions totaling more than 8.4 million euros will be issued to help mitigate the impact of crop and income losses.

During field visits in the Podravje region, the Minister addressed several critical issues facing the agricultural sector, including a shortage of animal feed that in some areas lasts four to five months. Farmers have called for greater flexibility regarding the Nitrate Directive to allow for earlier application of mineral fertilizers in response to changing agrometeorological conditions.

In discussions with the Slovenian Farmers' Union, the Minister also addressed systemic challenges such as excessive bureaucracy and lengthy administrative procedures. Looking toward future agricultural policy, the Ministry aims to increase investments in preventive measures like irrigation, shading, and water retention to ensure food sovereignty amidst increasing weather extremes.
