Slovenian Foreign Minister Seeks Transparency on Tanja Fajon's EU Sahel Envoy Appointment

Foreign Minister Tone Kajzer said Slovenia has not yet decided whether to support former minister Tanja Fajon's nomination as the European Union’s special representative for the Sahel region. He told EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas that he expects a full explanation of how the selection process was carried out and whether it was conducted transparently, adding that he had not proposed nor supported Fajon's candidacy.

Kajzer noted that the EU’s Coreper committee had originally been scheduled to decide on the appointment last week, but the item was removed from the agenda and, according to unofficial reports, Slovenia may have stalled the procedure. A written vote is now expected on Wednesday, requiring a qualified majority of at least 15 member states representing 65 % of the EU population for confirmation.
