Slovenian homeowners advised on reducing garden insects

Experts warn that common household features such as clogged gutters, flower pots, bird feeders, bright outdoor lighting, grills, compost bins and pet food containers create ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes, flies, ants, wasps and other pests. Regular maintenance—removing standing water, cleaning gutters, clearing organic debris and reducing food residues—can markedly lower insect presence.

A separate home‑based method suggests using coffee grounds combined with baking soda to create an unpleasant odor barrier that deters flies and mosquitoes. The mixture is applied around waste bins or heated gently to release fumes, while the soda helps neutralise food odours. Specialists stress that the trick should complement, not replace, basic sanitation measures such as promptly emptying trash and cleaning spills.
