Slovenian journalists condemn Svetlana Makarovič for verbal attack

Slovenian journalist organizations, including the Association of Journalists and Publicists (ZNP) and the Journalists' Association of Slovenia, have strongly condemned a verbal attack by artist and political activist Svetlana Makarovič against a Planet TV journalist. The incident occurred on October 2, 2026, during a court hearing related to a lawsuit filed by journalist Jože Možina against Makarovič for alleged defamation.

During the proceedings, the Planet TV reporter attempted to ask a question regarding freedom of expression, to which Makarovič responded by telling her, “Be quiet, because you are stupid.” The ZNP has demanded a public apology, stating that while interlocutors may refuse to answer, they are not justified in using personal insults or commanding journalists to remain silent. The association emphasized that artistic reputation does not grant the privilege to humiliate others and that freedom of expression must apply even to those whose views are disliked.

The verbal confrontation has added a new layer of tension to the ongoing legal dispute between Možina and Makarovič, which has spanned several years. Možina is seeking an apology and damages in his lawsuit, describing previous interactions with Makarovič as brutal and shameful attacks on his professional integrity.
