Slovenian journalists condemn verbal attack

Overview

Journalistic organizations in Slovenia, including the Association of Journalists and Publicists (ZNP) and the Journalists' Association of Slovenia, have condemned a verbal attack by artist and activist Svetlana Makarovič against a Planet TV reporter.

The incident occurred on October 2, 2026, during a court hearing for a defamation lawsuit filed by journalist Jože Možina against Makarovič. When the reporter attempted to ask a question about freedom of expression, Makarovič reportedly responded, “Be quiet, because you are stupid.”

The ZNP has demanded a public apology, arguing that while individuals may refuse to answer questions, they are not justified in using personal insults or commanding journalists to remain silent. The confrontation adds tension to the long-standing legal dispute between Možina and Makarovič.
