Slovenian MP opposes delay of battery cage poultry ban

Slovenian Member of Parliament Meira Hot has formally challenged a proposal to extend the transition period for phasing out battery cage poultry farming. The current proposal seeks to delay the ban from January 1, 2029, to 2035, a six-year extension that Hot argues would prolong animal suffering.

The initiative follows the release of footage by the animal protection society AETP, which depicts poor conditions in central Slovenian battery farms, including decaying carcasses and birds with significant feather loss. Hot has requested detailed data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food regarding why such a long extension is necessary, noting that current registry data suggests approximately 85 percent of poultry capacity has already transitioned to alternative systems.
