Slovenian MP throws parliamentary rules book during session

A heated confrontation occurred in the Slovenian Parliament during an emergency joint session of the Internal Affairs and Economy committees. The incident began when the session, intended to discuss draft amendments to the Foreigners Act and the Employment of Foreigners Act, was halted following a motion by SDS MP Andrej Kosi. Kosi argued that the session should be suspended because the legislative proposals had not yet been officially submitted to parliament.

In protest of the decision to end the debate, Levica MP Nataša Sukič accused the ruling majority of a “parliamentary hijacking” and a “coup d'état,” claiming the opposition was being denied its right to express views. During the dispute, Sukič threw a copy of the parliamentary rules book toward SDS MP Žan Mahnič, who was presiding over the session. Mahnič issued two warnings to Sukič before she demonstratively left the meeting.

The incident has prompted calls for the Ethics Commission to review the matter. While some officials suggested police involvement for a breach of public order, others noted that the incident highlights increasing tensions within the assembly. MP Katja Kokot expressed feeling unsafe in the parliamentary environment following the outburst.
