Slovenian police stop 220 km/h drunk driver after chase from Maribor to Koper
On the evening of 6 July, a 37‑year‑old man who had been causing trouble in the Maribor police area fled in his personal car while under the influence of alcohol. Police pursued him from Maribor, tracking his erratic speed ranging from about 60 km/h up to 220 km/h on the A1 highway. Multiple attempts to stop the vehicle with visual and acoustic signals failed. A hidden stinger device was deployed, puncturing the driver’s tyres, yet he continued the chase, even colliding with a police vehicle while reversing.
The driver finally halted at a fuel station in Koper after more than two hours on the road. He resisted arrest, prompting officers to use force and place him in handcuffs. He refused breath‑alcohol and drug tests and was ordered into custody pending a forensic medical examination. Police and investigators continue to examine the case for dangerous driving, obstruction of official duties, and possible retaliation against law‑enforcement officers.
