Slovenian police launch traffic safety campaign after summer death surge

The General Police Administration of Slovenia reported that 50 people died in traffic accidents during June, July and August, with 25 fatalities recorded in July alone last year. The majority of victims are young, and many deaths involve motorcyclists, moped riders and cyclists. Police officials attribute the spike to excessive speed, especially in summer when road conditions are favorable and traffic volumes increase.

In response, the police have introduced a new preventive campaign called #častnaprometna. Drivers are invited to make a personal pledge to avoid speeding, alcohol, drug use and mobile‑phone distraction while driving. The campaign uses AI‑generated characters such as “Degustator,” “Multipraktik” and “Moto Gonzales” to illustrate risky behaviours. Throughout the summer, police will intensify road checks, focusing on highways and sections under construction, and they have already increased their presence on busy routes.

Officials stressed that responsible driving and adherence to temporary traffic rules at work sites are essential to improve safety and reduce the number of severe accidents.
