Slovenian traffic safety concerns
Entities: Ljubljana Police Department · Domžale · Police Administration of Ljubljana · Portorož · University Clinical Center Ljubljana
Overview
Traffic safety problems in Slovenia have persisted into mid‑2026. Police data from Gorenjska showed 716 accidents up to 26 May, with one death and 23 serious injuries; drug testing revealed 45 positive results, including a cocaine‑positive truck driver near Škofja Loka. National statistics released in mid‑June indicated that, although alcohol‑related crashes fell 12 % in the first five months of 2024, fatalities rose to 11 deaths, with an average blood‑alcohol level of 1.41 ‰ among offenders. Drug‑impaired crashes numbered 29, one of them fatal. A June 22 report from Slovenj Gradec documented a range of incidents, from a cargo‑truck slide to a positive drug test for a VW Golf driver and a widely shared video of an e‑scooter narrowly avoiding a truck, prompting renewed calls for helmet use and lane discipline. In early July, the General Police Administration launched the #častnaprometna campaign after 50 traffic deaths were recorded over June‑August, urging drivers to pledge against speeding, alcohol, drugs and phone distraction. The campaign coincided with a series of high‑profile crashes: a minor on an unregistered moped collided with a police motorcycle in Domžale (July 8) and the seized moped was later stolen; the Maribor region logged 26 accidents in a single day, including a severe e‑scooter injury and a rider with a 2.1 ‰ BAC (July 9); multiple drunk‑driving crashes were investigated near Deskle, Trieste and Lucija, and a city‑bus collision occurred in Ljubljana (July 12). July 13 saw five serious accidents across Celje, including an alcohol‑impaired motorcyclist near Mislinja and several multi‑vehicle collisions. Early August reports from the Domžale‑Kamnik area noted burglaries and further traffic incidents, among them an alcohol‑related crash that led to licence revocation.
