Slovenian police report increase in traffic accidents and cocaine‑linked truck crash

Gorenjski police recorded 716 traffic accidents up to 26 May, up from 679 in the same period last year. One person died and 23 were seriously injured. The leading cause was vehicle movement, followed by inappropriate speed and wrong direction. Foreign drivers took part in 177 accidents, 91 of which they caused. Alcohol was involved in 36 cases. Bus drivers were involved in 13 accidents (8 caused), motorbike riders in 19 (13 caused), e‑scooter riders in 5 (4 caused), moped riders in 9 (7 caused), cyclists in 53 (26 caused) and pedestrians in 21 (5 caused). Police issued more than 7,700 traffic violations, carried out over 12,400 alcohol tests (203 positive, five refusals) and recorded over 45 positive drug tests, seizing 66 motor vehicles.

Separately, a 28‑year‑old truck driver reversing on a road near Grenc in Škofja Loka struck a pedestrian, who was seriously injured and taken to UBKC Ljubljana. A rapid test showed cocaine in the driver’s system, prompting a professional drug examination and a criminal investigation for endangering public safety. In another incident, an 18‑year‑old tractor driver’s trailer collided with a combine, seriously injuring the combine driver; police are also investigating that case under public‑safety offences.
