Slovenian political tensions rise over electoral integrity and parliamentary conduct
Political friction in Slovenia has intensified following disputes regarding the State Election Commission (DVK) and parliamentary procedures. Prime Minister Janez Janša announced intentions to submit legislative changes to the National Assembly within 14 days, potentially including criminal complaints against the DVK following recent referendum results. Janša suggested irregularities in the electoral process, a move that has drawn sharp criticism from opposition figures.
Asta Vrečko, co-coordinator of the Levica party, characterized Janša’s actions as an attempt to reshape the DVK into a compliant body, describing it as a “coup attempt on the institutions of the rule of law.”
Simultaneously, tensions erupted during a joint committee meeting on internal affairs and the economy. Levica MP Nataša Sukič engaged in a heated confrontation with the governing coalition regarding draft legislation on foreigners and employment. The dispute escalated when the coalition proposed suspending the session until the drafts were officially submitted to the National Assembly. Sukič accused the coalition of a “state coup” and an “attack on democracy” before abruptly leaving the meeting after a physical outburst involving papers and a pencil.
