Slovenian political tensions rise over inquiry commissions and impeachment proposal
Former Freedom Movement MP Mojca Šetinc Pašek has raised concerns regarding the potential political abuse of parliamentary inquiry commissions in Slovenia. Ahead of a referendum on the Parliamentary Inquiry Act, Šetinc Pašek stated that some commissions have been used to politically sanction individuals rather than for oversight. She specifically cited the commission investigating political influence on the police as an attempt to target former minister Tatjana Bobnar.
Separately, the Legislative Service of the National Assembly (ZPS) has ruled that the proposal for a constitutional impeachment against Prime Minister Janez Janša is unfounded. The ZPS noted that the proposal, submitted by the Freedom Movement and the Left, expresses mere doubt rather than establishing individual and criminal responsibility. Because the proposal lacks the necessary evidence and specific identification of the perpetrator required by law, the National Assembly's collegium decided that the impeachment proposal will not be included on the October session agenda.
