Slovenian President Nataša Pirc Musar faces scrutiny after motorway accident

Slovenian President Nataša Pirc Musar is facing political scrutiny following a motorway accident on July 31 in the Kastelec tunnel near Koper. The President’s van collided with an escort vehicle, resulting in a fractured collarbone for Pirc Musar, who admitted she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time. The incident has been referred to the Specialised State Prosecutor’s Office on suspicion of negligence because the driver involved was a police officer.

The accident has sparked controversy regarding the transparency of information released by the President’s office and the presence of a passenger, Victoria Krivolutskaya, a dual Russian-Slovenian citizen and long-time friend of the President. Critics have raised concerns regarding potential security risks associated with traveling with a Russian citizen in an official vehicle.

Pirc Musar has defended her actions, stating that the delay in disclosing the full extent of her injuries was due to waiting for clear medical information. She also emphasized that Krivolutskaya underwent required security checks when obtaining Slovenian citizenship and that their friendship has lasted nearly two decades. While some commentators have urged caution regarding Russian nationals in sensitive contexts, others note that public officials face increased exposure and that personal friendships are not inherently controversial.
