Janez Janša's government marks 100 days with budget rebalance
The fourth government of Janez Janša has completed its first 100 days, focusing on a comprehensive review of state finances and ministry restructuring. The administration reduced the number of ministries from 20 to 15 to streamline operations. During this period, the government identified a deficit of approximately 980 million euros across various ministries and worked to reconcile the budget with defense spending commitments and EU recovery fund requirements.
A budget rebalance was approved, projecting revenues of 16.5 billion euros and expenditures of 18.8 billion euros, resulting in a deficit of 2.2 billion euros (2.9% of GDP). Economic forecasts have also been adjusted, with GDP growth for the current year revised upward to 3.8% due to strong performance in the first half of the year.
Controversies remain regarding the expansion of the public sector and upcoming wage reforms. Unions have expressed concern that the public finances may not sustain planned wage increases through 2028. Meanwhile, the opposition, led by Robert Golob and the Freedom Movement, has established a shadow government, with Golob assuming leadership of the health portfolio.
