SMA Solar Technology opens new Gigawatt Factory in Germany

SMA Solar Technology has inaugurated a new Gigawatt Factory in Niestetal, near Kassel, Germany. The facility is designed to support utility-scale technologies, including photovoltaics, battery storage, hybrid systems, hydrogen, and data center applications.

The company invested approximately €80 million in the 46,000-square-meter site. Once operating at full capacity, the factory is expected to have an annual production capacity of more than 60 GW. The facility will manufacture central inverters, energy management devices, and storage solutions to meet the rising demand for electrification across industries, mobility, and digital infrastructure.

SMA Solar Technology noted that the investment aims to strengthen Europe’s industrial capabilities and provide the critical infrastructure needed to stabilize grids and ensure a secure energy supply during the global energy transition.
