Small modular reactor projects slated for Ohio and Czech Republic

American developer Elementl Power has selected GE Vernova's BWRX‑300 small modular reactors for a proposed Ohio plant with a total capacity of up to 1.5 GW. The first 600 MW block could begin construction in 2030 and be operational by 2034, subject to federal, state and NRC approvals and financed privately.

In the Czech Republic, Rolls‑Royce SMR and utility ČEZ plan to build up to three gigawatts of SMRs, with the first unit expected at the Temelín site in the early 2030s. The partnership includes Czech firm Škoda JS as a key supplier of pressure vessels and primary‑circuit components. The projects aim to replace coal‑fired capacity and will also require regulatory clearance.

Both initiatives illustrate a growing push for modular nuclear technology in the United States and Central Europe, leveraging private investment and serial manufacturing to accelerate deployment.
