Small Modular Reactor stocks lose $30 billion in market value

The market for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) has experienced a significant downturn following a period of intense speculation. Since reaching peak market values in October 2025, the collective market capitalization of leading U.S. developers—including NuScale Power, Nano Nuclear, and Oklo—has fallen by approximately $30.3 billion.

Short sellers have capitalized on this decline, earning an estimated $2.1 billion by betting against these stocks. The previous surge in share prices was driven by investor interest in nuclear energy as a power source for AI hyperscalers, alongside regulatory support and funding announcements. However, concerns regarding the lack of immediate revenue, long development timelines, and the early stage of the technology have contributed to the correction.

Experts note that many of these companies are currently loss-making and face significant technological, supply chain, and regulatory hurdles. While the industry was expected to provide rapid, modular energy solutions, many projects are not anticipated to produce electricity until the 2030s.
