Malaysia prepares SMART rescue team for Nepal flood relief
Following devastating floods and landslides in Nepal and China, 91 Malaysians are reported uncontactable, including 55 in Nepal and 36 in China. In Nepal's Rasuwa district, the death toll has reached 804, with thousands still missing. Rescue operations are currently focused on approximately 933 workers believed to be trapped in hydropower project tunnels.
Malaysia has pledged USD 1 million to support Nepal's recovery efforts. The Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) is fully prepared for deployment but is currently awaiting official authorization from the Nepali government to begin search and rescue operations.
Among the missing are two Malaysian fire officers, Mohd. Fakhrul Munir Mohd. Isa and Mohd. Sani Harul, who were part of a group traveling toward Everest Base Camp. Families of the missing are working closely with Wisma Putra to coordinate information and support.
