SmarTone to End 3G Service on October 9, 2026 and Offer Free Upgrades

Hong Kong mobile operator SmarTone announced that its 3G network will be shut down on 9 October 2026. The move is intended to re‑allocate spectrum for expanding 5G and next‑generation services. As of June 2026, only about 1 % of SmarTone’s mobile customers were still using 3G.

The company has been notifying affected users since last year, urging them to check whether their phones and SIM cards support 4G or 5G. To facilitate the transition, SmarTone will provide free SIM‑card replacements, discounted device upgrades and streamlined online guides. Additional support channels, including in‑store assistance and a 24‑hour helpline, target senior citizens and customers less familiar with digital technology.

The rollout of 5G in Hong Kong is already widespread, and the 3G shutdown is presented as a necessary step toward improving overall mobile broadband experience.
