Smartphone manufacturers debut new camera hardware and face AI imaging errors

Smartphone manufacturers are showcasing divergent approaches to mobile photography through new hardware and software developments.

Honor has introduced the Honor Robot Phone, which features the Titanium Agile Gimbal. This 4DoF camera system uses a motorized gimbal integrated directly into the device to provide mechanical stabilization. The hardware includes a 200-MP main camera with a 1/1.28-inch sensor and is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor. The device also features a Yoyo Robot Mode, which utilizes AI real-time object tracking and voice localization to automatically pan and tilt the camera for vlogging and livestreams.

In contrast, Xiaomi has faced criticism regarding its AI-driven image processing. During a recent solar eclipse, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra and Xiaomi 17 Pro reportedly failed to capture accurate images. Due to errors in automatic scene recognition, the devices' algorithms misidentified the darkened sun as the moon, applying artificial lunar textures and craters to the photos. This software error occurred while competing flagship models from Samsung, Google, and Oppo produced accurate captures.
