Smartphone mobile imaging technology developments

Overview

Smartphone manufacturers are introducing new hardware and software capabilities to advance mobile videography and photography.

HONOR has announced the HONOR Robot Phone, which utilizes a motorized robotic camera arm and a “titanium agile gimbal” with four degrees of freedom. Developed in collaboration with ARRI, the device features a 200-MP main camera and a “Yoyo Robot Mode” that uses AI for real-time object tracking and voice localization to assist with vlogging.

While hardware advancements continue, software-driven imaging has faced challenges. Xiaomi’s flagship models, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra and Xiaomi 17 Pro, reportedly experienced errors during a solar eclipse. Due to failures in automatic scene recognition, the devices’ algorithms misidentified the sun as the moon, applying “artificial lunar textures and craters” to the resulting images. This contrasted with accurate captures from competing models by Samsung, Google, and Oppo.
