Smartphone shipments fall 22% in Q3 2026 amid rising memory costs

Global smartphone shipments experienced a significant decline in the third quarter of 2026, falling 22% year-over-year to 255.3 million units, according to preliminary data from IDC. This represents the largest single-quarter annual decline on record.

The downturn is primarily attributed to a surge in memory chip costs, with DRAM and NAND prices increasing approximately 350% year-over-year. This price spike is driven by high demand for memory components within the artificial intelligence industry and data centers. As a result, the average retail price of smartphones has risen by approximately 20% this year.

The impact is uneven across the market. High-end manufacturers like Apple and Samsung have shown more resilience, with Apple shipments falling only 4% and Samsung falling 5.8%. Conversely, budget-oriented brands have been hit harder; Xiaomi shipments dropped 29.2%, while OPPO and vivo saw declines exceeding 30%. Analysts suggest that the entry-level segment is particularly vulnerable, with Counterpoint Research projecting a 40% decline in mobile phones priced under $200 by 2030.
