Smartphone usage habits linked to physical safety and mental health risks

Experts and personal accounts highlight various risks associated with daily smartphone usage, ranging from physical safety to mental well-being.

Regarding physical safety, a report details an incident where a user experienced a potential electrical hazard after charging a phone in bed. The user noticed a strange odor coming from a damaged charging cable that had been covered by bedding. To prevent a fire or short circuit, the user followed safety recommendations by cutting power via the circuit breaker rather than touching the cable.

On the psychological front, researchers warn that checking smartphones immediately upon waking can negatively impact mental health. Alfredo Rodríguez-Muñoz, a psychology professor at the Complutense University of Madrid, notes that receiving notifications during the brain's transition to an alert state can trigger stress responses and feelings of being overwhelmed.

A study in the journal Behavioral Neuroscience further suggests that checking devices within the first 15 minutes of waking is linked to higher anxiety levels and decreased concentration throughout the day. Psychologists also link this behavior to impulsivity and difficulty in emotional regulation.
