Smartphone usage impacts adolescent health and cognition

Research presents varying perspectives on the impact of smartphone and screen usage on adolescents. In France, data indicates that 42% of 12-to-17-year-olds spend between two and five hours daily on smartphones, with 9% exceeding five hours.

Medical experts highlight significant physical risks, particularly regarding vision. Increased screen time is linked to a higher risk of myopia, exacerbated by lack of sunlight and reduced outdoor activity. Experts from the Moorfields Biomedical Research Centre and Necker Hospital also note that late-night screen use can disrupt sleep cycles and melatonin production, further worsening myopia.

Conversely, a Finnish study suggests that screen time may have positive cognitive implications. The research indicates that the nature of digital activity may be more significant than total duration, potentially improving cognitive processing in adolescents when paired with regular physical activity.
