Smartphone usage impacts mental health and radiation exposure
Recent discussions highlight the psychological and physical implications of constant smartphone usage. A personal experiment involving a 24-hour digital detox—restricting use to only WhatsApp and phone calls—demonstrated the difficulty of breaking social media habits, such as checking Instagram or YouTube, which have become deeply ingrained in daily routines.
Regarding physical health, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BFS) notes that while current science does not confirm health risks from mobile communications, the technology is too young to fully assess long-term effects. To minimize radiation exposure at night, experts suggest keeping devices at a sufficient distance rather than relying solely on airplane mode. Furthermore, research from the International School of Management (ISM) indicates that intentional breaks from smartphones can improve mental recovery, facilitate better detachment from work, and aid regeneration.
