Smartphone usage linked to mental health risks in youth and elderly
Research highlights the complex impact of smartphone use on the mental health of different age groups. Among the elderly, studies suggest a dual relationship: while problematic use is linked to poor sleep, anxiety, and depression, active digital engagement for social connection and family contact can act as a protective factor against depression.
For children and adolescents, a UNICEF Spain report based on 4,000 participants in the Murcia region indicates significant risks. The report identifies anxiety, depression, and cyberbullying as primary concerns. Data shows that many minors use devices intensively, with a significant portion connecting after midnight. Approximately 6% of minors exhibit problematic social media use, which correlates with emotional distress and suicide risk. Additionally, the report notes high exposure to sexting, pornography, and digital harassment, noting that platforms are often not designed with minor vulnerabilities in mind.
