Smartphone use and overnight charging impacts on health and hardware

Experts are highlighting the physiological and technical implications of using smartphones near bedtime. Regarding sleep hygiene, medical specialist Vanessa Mendes notes that the blue light emitted by screens interferes with the production of melatonin, the hormone responsible for regulating sleep. This interference can delay sleep onset and result in shallower, less restorative rest. Additionally, consuming stressful content before bed can increase mental activation, making it harder for the brain to transition into sleep.

On the technical side, the practice of leaving smartphones plugged into chargers overnight does not significantly damage modern battery cells. Unlike older nickel-cadmium batteries that suffered from a ‘memory effect,’ contemporary lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries utilize advanced management systems that regulate energy flow once a safe limit is reached. Battery degradation is more closely linked to thermal and physical variables rather than the act of overnight charging itself.
