Smer-SD leads Progresívne Slovensko in latest SCIO poll

A recent SCIO opinion poll shows Smer-SD leading Progresívne Slovensko (PS) for the first time since March 2024, though the margin is statistically insignificant. Smer-SD received 17.32 percent of decided voters, while PS followed closely with 16.94 percent. This represents a shift from May, when PS held a lead of 19.70 percent to Smer-SD's 15.41 percent.

Other parties in the poll include Republika at 10.45 percent, Hnutie SLOVENSKO at 9.30 percent, HLAS-SD at 9.04 percent, and SaS at 8.41 percent. The poll suggests eight parties could enter parliament.

In a separate political discussion, President Peter Pellegrini suggested that a 'grand coalition' between the two strongest, currently competing parties—Smer-SD and PS—could potentially benefit Slovakia during difficult times, provided leaders could prioritize stability over personal egos. Michal Šimečka, leader of PS, rejected the idea as an 'absurdity,' stating that Smer-SD must be defeated in the 2027 elections. Political commentator Eduard Chmelár proposed an even broader scenario involving Hlas to ensure government stability.
