India Women host Zimbabwe in T20I series as Smriti Mandhana begins captaincy

The Indian women’s cricket team begins a new era under full-time captain Smriti Mandhana as they host Zimbabwe for a three-match T20I series in Raipur. The series, which includes matches on October 16, 18, and 20 at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium, marks the first time the venue has hosted a women’s international match and the first bilateral series between these two nations.

Mandhana, who succeeds Harmanpreet Kaur, emphasized that the series serves as vital preparation for the upcoming Women’s Champions Trophy. She noted that while the team has seen recent success, including an Asia Cup win and Asian Games gold, there are specific areas in the T20 format that require further development.

In a move to encourage female spectators, the Chhattisgarh State Cricket Sangh has announced free entry for women for all three T20I matches. This initiative follows a suggestion from Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai. Following the T20I leg, the teams will move to Vadodara for a three-match ODI series starting October 23.

Individual milestones are also in focus. Mandhana is 133 runs away from becoming the first batter to reach 5,000 runs in women’s T20Is, while Indian spinner N Sree Charani is three wickets away from becoming the first player from a Test-playing nation to take 50 T20I wickets in a single calendar year.
