Snap Inc. launches Snap Specs augmented reality glasses

Snap Inc. has officially launched Snap Specs, a standalone augmented reality (AR) device priced at $2,195. Unveiled at an event in Los Angeles, the glasses are designed to function independently of a mobile phone, integrating digital services directly into the user's field of vision through built-in lens displays.

The device features Specs Intelligence, an AI-driven system capable of translating spoken conversations in up to 60 languages with real-time text overlays. Users can make Bluetooth calls, listen to Spotify, and stream video from platforms like YouTube and Max. The glasses also support e-commerce via Shopify, allowing users to preview 3D product models.

For entertainment and fitness, Snap has developed interactive experiences, including sports training tools for basketball in partnership with the NBA, as well as modules for soccer and golf. The device also supports multiplayer digital tabletop games like chess.

To address privacy concerns, the glasses do not use facial recognition for tracking individuals. A visible external LED indicator activates whenever the device records video, captures photos, or records audio to alert those in the vicinity. Shipping is expected to begin in late October in the United States, France, and the United Kingdom.
