Snap Inc. launch of Specs AR glasses
Overview
Snap Inc. has launched Specs, its first consumer augmented reality (AR) glasses, alongside an AI-driven service called Specs Intelligence. The standalone device, priced starting at $2,195, is designed to function independently of a smartphone using hand and voice interactions.
Specs Intelligence serves as an anticipatory AI assistant that works across Specs, iPhone, and Mac to surface relevant information. The hardware features dual Snapdragon processors and waveguide displays. For enterprise use, Snap is collaborating with Nvidia, Amazon Web Services, and Salesforce to integrate professional workflows.
Additional capabilities of the device include real-time translation of spoken conversations in up to 60 languages, Bluetooth calling, and streaming for services like Spotify, YouTube, and Max. The glasses also support e-commerce through Shopify and interactive fitness experiences developed with partners like the NBA. To address privacy, the device includes a visible external LED indicator that activates during video, photo, or audio recording, and it does not utilize facial recognition for tracking individuals. Shipping is expected to begin in the United States, United Kingdom, and France.
Regarding the AI component, Specs Intelligence is designed to be a proactive service that builds a continuous representation of a user’s goals, priorities, relationships, and routines. By integrating with voluntarily connected tools like Gmail and Google Calendar, the assistant can identify tasks requiring attention and present information before it is explicitly requested. This includes capabilities such as gathering documents for business meetings or automatically reconstructing travel itineraries by consolidating booking details.
