SNCF modernises Paris‑Cherbourg railway, causing July service disruptions

SNCF Réseau is undertaking a large‑scale regeneration of the century‑old Paris‑Cherbourg line. The work, part of the EOLE project, will be billed at €170 per minute (€10,200 per hour) and relies on specialised equipment that can operate only within short time windows. A 101‑hour intervention is scheduled from 11 to 14 July 2026, during which 150 staff will be deployed and traffic will be reduced by half.

The upgrade targets rails, signalling and other track infrastructure to improve reliability, passenger comfort and safety on the route serving Normandy. During the works, regular trains between Cherbourg and Paris will be halted, forcing travellers onto longer, multi‑connection journeys that can exceed five hours and increase fares from the usual €30 to €75‑94. One passenger, Enola Quenault, said, “Ça fait plus de deux mois que je n’ai pas vu ma famille,” highlighting the personal impact of the disruption.
