SNCF revitalizes French rural stations with local services

SNCF Gares & Connexions is implementing a national program to revitalize unused spaces in French railway stations. Through the ‘Place de la Gare’ initiative, part of the broader ‘1001 Gares’ project, the company is repurposing approximately 80,000 m² of vacant space across nearly a thousand stations in rural, peri-urban, and mid-sized urban areas.

These spaces, which include former ticket offices and waiting rooms, are being leased to local entrepreneurs to provide essential services. Depending on the specific needs of the territory, these locations are hosting bakeries, tea rooms, florists, solidarity grocery stores, bicycle repair workshops, libraries, and coworking spaces.

In addition to commercial revitalization, the movement toward local services is supported by the ‘France Services’ network. This initiative aims to bring administrative services—such as tax assistance, family allowances, retirement, employment, and health insurance—closer to residents, particularly in rural departments like Aube, with the goal of ensuring public services are accessible within thirty minutes of any inhabitant.
