Expansion of local public services in France

France is expanding its local public service accessibility through the growth of the ‘France Services’ network and the repurposing of infrastructure. The France Services network, which provides assistance with taxes, pensions, health insurance, and employment, has seen significant usage growth, rising from 1.17 million assisted procedures in 2020 to 9 million in 2023. To support this, the 2026 budget includes 68 million euros for the network, with specific funding for locations in fragile rural revitalization zones. A national mapping tool is also being deployed to help authorities identify underserved areas.

Complementing these administrative efforts, SNCF Gares & Connexions is working to revitalize rural and peri-urban areas through the ‘Place de la Gare’ initiative. This program repurposes vacant space in nearly a thousand railway stations to host local businesses such as bakeries, grocery stores, and coworking spaces. These commercial efforts align with the broader goal of the ‘France Services’ network to ensure public services are accessible within thirty minutes of any inhabitant.
