SNCF to ban certain bicycles and personal transport devices on TGV and Intercités

Starting December 13, SNCF will implement new baggage policies for TGV Inoui and Intercités trains, banning several types of bicycles and personal mobility devices deemed too bulky.

Prohibited items include bicycles exceeding 185 cm in length, those with tires wider than 6 cm, fatbikes, tandems, and multi-wheeled vehicles such as cargo bikes, longtails, and tricycles. Additionally, gyropods and hoverboards are banned. SNCF Voyageurs stated these measures address “major issues regarding safety and the fluidity of movement on board,” noting that large items can hinder passenger boarding and impact train punctuality.

Standard electric-assist bicycles remain permitted under existing rules: they require a €10 reservation per trip on TGV Inoui if transported whole, or they may be carried for free if folded or disassembled in a bag. Folding electric scooters and gyroroues are still allowed provided they are folded and do not exceed dimensions of 90x130x50 cm. However, models with seats, multiple wheels, or tires wider than 6 cm are prohibited.

Violators may face fines of €130, which can increase to €150 if the device obstructs movement or if passengers attempt to recharge batteries on board.
