SNCF bicycle transport and mobility policies
Overview
SNCF is implementing divergent approaches regarding bicycle transport and active mobility.
Starting December 13, SNCF will introduce new baggage policies for TGV Inoui and Intercités trains. These regulations ban several types of bulky personal mobility devices to address “major issues regarding safety and the fluidity of movement on board.” Prohibited items include bicycles exceeding 185 cm in length, fatbikes, tandems, cargo bikes, and multi-wheeled vehicles, as well as gyropods and hoverboards. Violators may face fines ranging from €130 to €150.
Simultaneously, SNCF Gares & Connexions and Transilien SNCF Voyageurs are working to promote the integration of train and bicycle travel. As part of the ‘Mai à vélo’ initiative, the company is encouraging year-round active mobility by providing services such as secure bicycle parking, air pumps, and repair tools at stations, alongside digital resources like GPS routes to assist travelers.
