The South African Weather Service has placed an Orange Level 6 warning on disruptive rain and an Orange Level 5 warning on disruptive snow for the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu‑Natal provinces. The system, a cut‑off low pressure front, is expected to bring heavy rain, snow, strong winds and near‑freezing temperatures from the evening of 28 July 2026, persisting into Wednesday and clearing by Thursday. Flooding of bridges, roads and settlements, damage to property and infrastructure, and traffic disruptions are forecast along the coast between East London and Port Edward and on high‑altitude routes in the Maloti‑Drakensberg and Lesotho border area.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has urged motorists to drive cautiously, reduce speed, increase following distances, avoid unnecessary travel, and carry emergency supplies such as warm clothing, water and a charged phone. Drivers are advised to use headlights even in daylight, keep vehicles road‑worthy, and obey any road‑closure barriers on mountain passes. No fire‑danger warnings were issued.

The weather outlook also notes that Gauteng, the Free State and the Western Cape will experience cooler, mostly dry conditions with isolated showers and wind along the south‑west coast. The severe weather is expected to subside from the west on Thursday.
