Colorado‑Utah Border Wildfire Kills Three Firefighters
Three U.S. wildland firefighters were killed and two others injured in a burn‑over incident while battling the Knowles and Gore fires that merged into the Snyder Fire along the Colorado‑Utah border on June 27‑28, 2026. The crew, part of the U.S. Wildland Fire Service and U.S. Forest Service Helitack teams, deployed emergency fire shelters before the fast‑moving flames overwhelmed them. The fire had burned roughly 28,000 acres with 0 % containment and continued to spread across rugged terrain.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis declared a state of emergency and authorized the Colorado National Guard to assist, while Utah Governor Spencer Cox activated resources and issued evacuation orders for nearby communities. Federal agencies opened an investigation into the circumstances of the deaths. The incident underscores the extreme fire behavior driven by record‑low snowpack, high temperatures, low humidity and strong winds across the western United States.
Officials have not released the firefighters’ names pending family notification, though later releases identified them as Emily Barker, Nick Hutcherson and Sydney Watson. Tributes and a procession of emergency vehicles escorted the bodies from Grand Junction Regional Airport to the Mesa County coroner’s office. The fire remains a high‑priority incident as agencies continue suppression efforts and monitor worsening conditions in the region.
