São João da Barra begins study to combat coastal erosion
The municipality of São João da Barra has launched field activities for a Technical, Economic, and Environmental Feasibility Study (EVTEA) to combat coastal erosion in the districts of Atafona and Açu. The project aims to address a chronic erosion process that has affected the coastline for over five decades, destroying homes, streets, and essential infrastructure.
Contracted to SEACaruso Soluções Oceânicas & Energias Renováveis for R$ 5.6 million, the 18-month study will employ 29 specialists. The research includes hydrodynamic measurements in the Paraíba do Sul River, seabed mapping, sediment analysis, and monitoring of ocean currents and waves. Data will be integrated into mathematical models to simulate maritime dynamics and test various protection scenarios, such as sand replenishment, dune recovery, or the construction of rigid structures.
To facilitate community engagement, the local government has established 'Erosion Centers' in Atafona and Açu. These units serve as direct communication channels for residents and fishermen to provide historical accounts and ask questions. The study also includes a social diagnosis involving interviews with at least 211 residents to assess the human impact of the receding coastline.
