Coastal erosion study in São João da Barra

Overview

The municipality of São João da Barra has launched an 18-month Technical, Economic, and Environmental Feasibility Study (EVTEA) to address chronic coastal erosion in the districts of Atafona and Açu. The erosion process has reportedly affected the coastline for over five decades, resulting in the destruction of homes, streets, and essential infrastructure.

Contracted to SEACaruso Soluções Oceânicas & Energias Renováveis for R$ 5.6 million, the project utilizes a team of 29 specialists. The research involves hydrodynamic measurements in the Paraíba do Sul River, seabed mapping, sediment analysis, and the monitoring of ocean currents and waves. These data points will be integrated into mathematical models to simulate maritime dynamics and evaluate various protection scenarios, such as sand replenishment, dune recovery, or the construction of rigid structures.

To facilitate community engagement, the local government established ‘Erosion Centers’ in Atafona and Açu. These hubs allow residents and fishermen to share historical accounts and ask questions. The study also includes a social diagnosis involving interviews with at least 211 residents to assess the human impact of the receding coastline.
