Brazil municipalities implement climate resilience and El Niño preparedness measures
Various Brazilian municipalities and state governments are implementing diverse strategies to mitigate the impacts of climate change and the El Niño phenomenon.
In Mato Grosso do Sul, health services are undergoing training to prepare for extreme weather, including heatwaves, droughts, and changes in disease patterns like arboviruses. Similarly, the state of Rio de Janeiro is preparing 92 municipalities through risk mapping and enhanced monitoring systems.
Technological solutions are being deployed to enhance resilience. João Pessoa is piloting the 'JP Resiliente' project, which uses artificial intelligence and Digital TV 3.0 to provide localized flood alerts via SMS and television. ABM is also training municipalities to use the Bússola Climática, an AI-driven platform developed by C40 Cities and the Global Covenant of Mayors, to aid in climate-related decision-making.
Local governments are also taking direct preventative actions. Criciúma canceled its 101st anniversary celebrations to ensure municipal resources remain available for potential climate emergencies. In Içara, an interdisciplinary committee has been formed to manage flood risks, while São João da Barra launched a technical structure for natural disaster alerts.
