Amazon forest fires prompt São Paulo task force deployment

A specialized task force from the São Paulo State Military Fire Department and Civil Defense has intensified operations to combat forest fires in the Amazonas state. The mission includes 25 firefighters and five Civil Defense agents working alongside local Amazonas authorities.

To navigate the challenging Amazonian geography, the teams are utilizing advanced technology, including Starlink satellite internet for remote communication, solar panels for equipment recharging, and drones equipped with thermal cameras for monitoring heat points. Logistical support includes the deployment of fire retardants and water cisterns.

In the western region of Pará, the situation is similarly critical. The Pará Military Fire Department, in coordination with the municipalities of Santarém, Belterra, and Mojuí dos Campos, has established a joint crisis room to manage the surge in fires. Pará has recorded over 16,000 heat spots, with significant risks to rural properties and indigenous communities near major highways.

Religious leaders in Santarém, including Archbishop Dom Irineu Roman, have issued warnings regarding the impact of prolonged drought and smoke on local populations and aviation safety.
