São Paulo Environmental Police launch Piracema Operation

The São Paulo Military Environmental Police are launching the Piracema 2026/2027 Operation to combat predatory fishing and protect native fish species during their reproductive migration period. The restrictions are set to take effect on November 1 and will continue until February 28, 2027.

Law enforcement will intensify surveillance across rivers, dams, and reservoirs throughout the state, including specific focus areas such as Botucatu. The operation aims to safeguard the natural reproduction of species like dourado, pintado, curimbatá, and piapara by prohibiting the capture, transport, and sale of native fish within protected watersheds.

While fishing for non-native species may be permitted under specific regulations regarding location and equipment, strict prohibitions remain in place for certain areas such as marginal lagoons and sections near dams or waterfalls. Violators face penalties including fines, seizure of equipment and vessels, and potential criminal charges.
