São Paulo Piracema fishing restrictions

Overview

The São Paulo Military Environmental Police have launched the Piracema 2026/2027 Operation to protect native fish species during their reproductive migration period. The fishing ban is scheduled to run from November 1, 2026, through February 28, 2027.

Enforcement will involve three distinct stages: preventive actions through October 31, intensified enforcement during the closed season, and monitoring in March 2027. The operation focuses on safeguarding species such as dourado, pintado, curimbatá, and piapara by prohibiting their capture, transport, and sale within protected watersheds, including the Paraná River Basin.

While fishing for non-native species like tilapia or carp remains permitted under specific regulations, fishing is entirely banned in sensitive areas such as marginal lagoons, waterfalls, and sections near dams. Violators face significant penalties, including fines ranging from R$ 700 to R$ 100,000, the seizure of equipment and vessels, and potential criminal charges.
